Indian state Tamil Nadu has ordered 40,000 SUSE Linux or dual-boot SUSE Linux and Windows XP Starter Edition desktops for schools and government offices.

They’re obviously hedging their bets with the dual-boot, there are some applications that still don’t work very well in either emulation or don’t have a native Linux port, but with XP Starter Edition, you’re limited to 3 concurrent apps, and they have said that they will urge users to use SUSE Linux whenever possible.

The projected cost savings from this move is anywhere from 15-25%, which though we don’t know the budget for an entire Indian state, has to be some serious jing.
