The executive director of the Open Source Software Institute has told the press that the Navy will now “treat OSS as COTS when it meets the definition of a commercial item”, or in other words, the Navy will give equal treatment to Open Source Software, right up there with Common Off The Shelf software, aka Proprietary Software.

We’ve known John Weathersby (the Exec Dir of OSSI) for many years, he’s one of the top champions of OSS in the government and military.  This is great work from him and his organization, he’s been working on the Navy and OSS for quite a while, and with tangible results.

You can read more about this event(PDF) on the OSSI website, and if you’re an organization who profits from or builds your products on OSS, particularly in conjunction with the military and government, consider joining the OSSI as a member.
